Best Lake Thun Sunset Spots Near Interlaken

Best Lake Thun Sunset Spots Near Interlaken

Last updated: 31 July 2026 · 2026 pass prices, routes and seasons verified

One piece of geography decides every good sunset photograph here, and almost no guide mentions it: Lake Thun runs east to west, and Interlaken sits at the eastern end. That means the sun sets straight down the length of the lake, away from you, with the water catching the light all the way to the horizon. You are already standing in the right place — the only question is how high you want to be.

Harder Kulm — the one to do first

Why it works

A funicular climbs from the edge of Interlaken to a viewing platform that projects out over the valley on steel supports. From it you see both lakes at once — Thun to the west catching the sunset, Brienz to the east going dark — with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau lined up behind you.

Nowhere else gives you that combination for ten minutes of travel. Check the last downward departure before you go up; it is the single most common way people get caught out.

The other four

Neuhaus — free and flat

Where the Aare meets Lake Thun, about twenty minutes on foot from Interlaken West along the river, or a short bus ride covered by your pass.

You are at water level looking straight down the lake, which puts the whole sunset in reflection. No ticket, no timetable, no last cable car to catch. The best option if you only want to sit still.

Niederhorn — the high one

Above Beatenberg on the northern shore, reached by boat or bus and then a funicular. Around 1,950 m, so the view runs far past the lake into the Bernese Alps.

50% off with a pass. Higher, quieter and more effort than Harder Kulm — worth it on a second visit, or if you want ibex in the foreground.

Spiez — the postcard

A castle on a headland above a curved harbour, with vineyards behind. Because Spiez sits on the southern shore facing north-west, the light rakes across the bay rather than hitting you head on.

Boat there, train back in twenty minutes — both free with your pass, so you can stay until the light goes.

An evening sailing — the underrated one

The boats on Lake Thun are completely free with a Swiss Travel Pass, including the later departures. Sunset from the upper deck, moving west down the lake, is better than most paid excursions in the region.

Check the timetable for the final return sailing, or plan to come back by train from wherever you land.

The practical trap: every elevated option here — Harder Kulm, Niederhorn, and the boats — stops running not long after sunset, and in some months the last departure leaves before the sun is fully down. Look up the final descent time first and plan backwards from it. Neuhaus and Spiez have no such problem, which is why they are the safe choices late in the season.

When to go

  • May to July gives the latest sunsets, around 21:00 at midsummer — but also the haziest air.
  • September and October are the best months: clear air after the summer humidity, sunset around 19:00 to 20:00, and the lifts still running full timetables.
  • Winter sunsets are early, around 17:00, and the light on snow is exceptional — but Harder Kulm closes for part of the season, so check before planning around it.
  • After rain is reliably the best evening of any week. Clearing weather leaves the air scrubbed and the cloud dramatic.

When the sunset plan will not work

Two practical things ruin more lakeside sunset evenings here than cloud does.

  • The mountains take the sun early. In a steep valley the light goes well before the time any sunset app gives you. Be in position considerably earlier than the official time, or you will arrive to find it already happened.
  • Check how you get back before you go. Lakeside services thin out in the evening and boats stop earlier than trains. The best viewpoint you cannot leave afterwards is not the best viewpoint.

How this fits the rest of your trip

Sunset spots are the right way to end a mountain day, because they cost almost nothing and need no planning. Pair one with Schilthorn or Grindelwald First earlier in the day, or with a lake crossing — our Lake Thun vs Lake Brienz guide covers which one to sail and when.

Our 3-day Interlaken itinerary builds Harder Kulm into the first evening for exactly this reason: it orients you, it is cheap with a pass, and it makes the rest of the region make sense. Check what else your pass covers in boats, buses and mountain discounts before paying for anything.

Harder Kulm is the short, cheap one. The mountain excursions guide covers the bigger summits and what your pass is worth on each.

Lake Thun sunset questions

Where is the best place to watch the sunset near Interlaken?

Harder Kulm, for most people. A ten-minute funicular from the edge of Interlaken reaches a platform where you see Lake Thun catching the sunset to the west and Lake Brienz going dark to the east, with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau behind. It is 50% off with a Swiss Travel Pass.

Why does Lake Thun work so well for sunsets?

Because the lake runs east to west and Interlaken sits at the eastern end, so the sun sets straight down the length of the water, away from you. The whole lake catches the light rather than a small section of it.

Is there a free sunset spot near Interlaken?

Neuhaus, where the Aare meets Lake Thun, about twenty minutes on foot from Interlaken West or a short bus ride covered by your pass. You are at water level looking directly down the lake, and there is no last cable car to catch.

Can I watch the sunset from a boat on Lake Thun?

Yes, and the boats are completely free with a Swiss Travel Pass including the later departures. Sunset from the upper deck heading west is better than most paid excursions here — just check the final return sailing, or plan to take the train back.

When is the best time of year for sunsets over Lake Thun?

September and October. The air is clearer than in high summer, sunset falls at a civilised 19:00 to 20:00, and the mountain railways are still running full timetables. The evening after rain clears is reliably the best of any week.

What is the biggest mistake people make?

Not checking the last downward departure. Harder Kulm, Niederhorn and the boats all stop running shortly after sunset, and in some months the final service leaves before the sun is fully down. Plan backwards from that time, or choose Neuhaus or Spiez where it does not matter.
